The Panthers are back home at Pepper Stadium after a long month on the road. The NRL Panthers are on a 2 game winning streak looking to make it 3 from 3 with a with against the Titans. The team is starting to look dangerous in attack, showing what they are capable of in windy New Zealand.

The Holden Cup side seem unstoppable, racking up over 70 points a game over the last two rounds, it will take a supreme effort from the Titans to stop the Holden Cup juggernauts from racking up another win and extending their lead at the top of the table.

On Friday the NSW Cup Panthers took on the Bullodogs at Belmore, where Nathan Cleary, Dyland Edwards, and Tyrone May were brought into the squad from Holden Cup. All three had a excellent game, the NSW Panthers defeating the Bulldogs 16-12.

This weeks action...

Telstra Peremiership: Penrith Panthers v Gold Coast Titans @ Pepper Stadium Penrith - 22/5 @ 2pm
Holden Cup: Penrith Panthers v Gold Coast Titans @ Pepper Stadium Penrith - 22/5 @ 11:30am
Intrust Super Premiership NSW: Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs v Penrith Panthers @ Belmore Oval (PEN 16 - CBY 12)

we were terrible and yet the Titans were not much better and we get beat at home when so much was on the line in this game.

Our forwards save for Latu were terrible

Peachy is NOT a centre

Wallace is a Hooker and that is it....he is NOT a 7

We played like strangers......dropping balls, balls passing into players, passes going to ground and what was going on with taking the bombs???

On that form and with so much at stake......this team will be lucky to make the 8......and thats saying something considering Parra will be stripped of points which means there are 15 teams with a chance to make the 8

Where are our moves?

where are our set plays?

where is the game management to reset when we have been scored against?

where is the game management when we are in front front?

The news seems to suggest Moylan and Mansour will be picked in the SOO side but Moylan was terrorised by the Titans kickers and he come up with mistakes......Mansour was solid but also made mistakes.

Latu was good.......Matagi was hard hitting but made mistakes

Merrin goes missing and still cannot play 80 minutes

Sadly Hiku looks like he is gone for the season which now raises some serious issues as we have NO specialist centre on the left or right side......only makeshift in Yeo and Peachy

I am starting to have concerns about this coach and asking can he coach?

This dumb loss comes on the back of our best efforts last week to lose.

Sure there were disruptions but they had as many disruptions and they played with heart and not much else.

The Titans are business like.........simple and hardworking for each other and keep coming

There is a lot wrong with our team......we are making huge defensive errors and our scoring ability is left to offloads in the hope of breaking the line and not structure

Soward to his credit ran at the line today and guess what.......he poked his head through a few times

In short.......we are now in deep trouble territory.

Lets see how Griffin responds to this.........Blake clearly is languishing in lower grades for whatever reason and now we have no specialist centres

The team failed today........and failed miserably.

I think too many took the Titans for granted and had an eye on next weeks bye........at least they cannot lose that game!

Next game is against Storm in Melbourne.

we are now on same points as Rabbits,Titans and Dragons........with the terrible Warriors on 8........Sea Eagles on 8 and Tigers on 8

That type of performance, regardless of who is coaching or playing, is the one thing that this club consistently produces.

It is sewn into the Panthers fabric.

i disagree and quite strongly

we have had sides who will bust their guts for each other, the fans and sponsors.......namely our 2 winning premiership teams.

you can have bad days and you can have good days and this goes to any team but despite our own enthusiasm this team has major issues.

I just watched the press conference and i would urge people to watch Moylan in it........talk about disinterested.

Maybe just maybe there is something seriously wrong inside this team

i commented on in the last few weeks of players showing anger at each other in the game and i thought (with a positive view) this was about how we could be better

maybe there is something wrong inside the team.........because today there were players who were not playing to their highly paid salary.........ie Merrin and he is not alone but he is getting paid a fortune compared to lesser names who are making him look average.

Latu was our best forward.........Mckendry barely did anything........Gillard was average (i realise he had a broken nose)......Cartwright was average.....FH was strong until his broken thumb......Segy was average

Latimore had no impact and very little game time

anyway..........it was horrible.......we are just lucky we have other teams i.e. Roosters etc who are even worse.

..... Pepper Stadium performance had as much sting as an Oak ice coffee.

Not sure what the problem is, but I'd like to recommend you fix it NOW !

I said to a few people that our minds weren't on the job today, and the result showed that. I don't know whether the team was still mentally in Christchurch, or was looking forward to the bye next week, but the game was there to be won, and no one looked interested in grabbing it.

Most frustrating game ever.

I have a take on how most tries are scored in the NRL, which I am sure would be played out by statistics.
Here it is -; If you cross the half way line around about 2nd or 3rd tackle and you are really motoring down field you are really a good chance of scoring. If you are wedging down the middle, your sucking the defence towards the centre this is great for the attack for many reasons the guys behind the ruck haven't retreated before the next runner comes at them. This brings the fringe defenders in. Also another bonus is the attacking backs are really going to be standing deep and ready to run onto it.
So to restate the ideology, teams steaming over the advantage line, crossing over the midfield are likely to score in three ways - straight down the guts ending with a short offload from forward to forward (Latu like) to put some over near the posts. - a cross kick bomb or grubber. - A sweeping back line play with fringe defenders being too close to the centre dragging the outside defenders in. The defence runs out of numbers. Try out wide.

Now in opposition to that - being camped on a team's line can lead to points but a lot of times it becomes a shemozzle ending in a error by the attack or a kick that goes dead because there is so little room to move.

It was mentioned in the games telecast that the Panthers spend more time in the attacking twenty than any other team.

That game was the perfect example of that theory. And it was frustrating. Worse still was how the game was refereed and how our playmakers controlled the options on field.
I don't agree with bagging out forwards they dominated again and got the team down onto the oppositions line way quicker than they did on ours, and also kept them from getting into our half. We dominated field position. There wasn't much of a difference in run meters but it is hard to rack up run meters when your camped on the oppositions line you just move the ball from side to side.

Two things that frustrated me right throughout was the refereeing of the play the ball. We all know teams are happy to give penalties away early in the count to slow down attacking raids on their line. We got no penalties late in the count - they were all early count penalties. You could tell how long the first tackle was taking because how little meters Mansour and DWZ made on their first settle.
The second thing was decisions from our playmakers when camped on thier line. It's easy to say in hindsight but they should of taken the kicks for goal and the field goal at the end and they should of grubbered in goal more. Moving the ball side to side on set defences wasn't working. When the Panthers did get a penalty on a repeat set on the line our playmakers took way too long to make a decision. (The defences were getting set while they were making up their minds)

Lastly it wasn't just the refereeing and our playmakers decision making that slowed down the attacking raids from us = the injuries all came when we were on the line attacking.

Everything that happened in that game conspired to get the defense ready for our raids on their line. It did seem to be endemic of our attack this season but it was amplified this game. It was the most frustrating game ever for me!

You really have to question the coach. Players were up for it but I don't think the coach was.

The sooner Gus sacks Hook and pit Brenno in charge, the sooner we start becoming a threat

So often the Titans would stay down when we had possession, and the referee continually stops the clock. Greg Bird was lying on the ground for what felt like 10 minutes, milking a penalty. Refs then seemingly have no choice but to call time off. Titans get their breath back, and set their defence.

Idk if im crazy, but i swear we have less injuries when we play more direct. The injuries happen when our backs are sideways.

Terrible game.Should have been two penalties for RCG and Soward getting tackled high.

Other teams know we play best when its a fast game. So they slow the game down, by niggling, milking penalties (or now by faking injury) and complaining to the ref.

We have many games like this at home. However, usually its against the storm and the rabbitohs. Titans staff did their homework i guess.

These are all excuses, but the biggest issue was our non-existent goal line defence. What was that garbage? We play the storm next. If we play anything like that storm will put 50 on us, again.

edit: ON a brighter note, how good is our 20's team. Filled with SG ball blokes who were clearly outmuscled, and out sized still found a way to come back from 18- 6 down and win. Amazing effort.

your analysis highlights my points made earlier which were laughed at........our for and against!

further i called into question our decision making my the senior players like Soward and Wallace

Further on the forwards.......YES you can single them out

like Merrin........what did he do yesterday?

Like Cartwright who was poor in defence and never made a line break?

Like McKendry who did nothing

RCG and Latu were best with FH going great until he was forced from the field with a broken thumb but at least he was running hard with intent

McKendry wasn't and Merrin certainly were not.

And why we have no potency in attack is that we have NO centres........Peachy is NOT a centre and Hiku whilst solid is not penetrating and now sadly gone for the season

You can make all the excuses and reasons as to why we got bad calls but if you are playing to a game plan and have set moves etc.........the 50/50 calls go your way

That team yesterday was a rabble.

And i REPEAT........we need a real number 7.........someone who can run at the line.......and ask questions of the defence.

Wallace is NOT a 7.

I would drop Seg and keep Wallace at hooker and bring Cleary into the team

That might fix something......but we also have major problems with our centres now as well.

The coach was cruising.....wonder how he handles this drama?

Segeyaro might need to explain to Hook why he was dining with these characters as reported in todays papers

"Corey Norman, James Segeyaro and Junior Paulo dined out with bikies and accused criminals before drug bust"

If ever words were destined to come back to haunt, it was Soward’s comments on Friday that he’d be disappointed if any of the aspiring State of Origin players in his side were thinking of anything (going into Sunday’s game) other than the task at hand, namely beating the Gold Coast. It could hardly go unnoticed that all contenders for SoO selection, with the possible exception of Trent Merrin, had their worst game for the season. To be fair, Josh Mansour was having a strong game right up until the closing minutes when, along with David Peachey, he failed to show any urgency shutting down what should have been a fairly innocuous counter-attack. Catching the ball on the full and playing to the whistle are two of the most basic precepts of Rugby League 101 and at the most critical point in the game, Mansour and Peachey failed miserably to do both. You spill a ball, it’s up to you to kill it, not assume the referee will blow it up (the play, not the ball).

Moylan, usually the consummate exponent of “less is more” took the ball to and into the line more in this one game than he has in the entire season. Not only did he not manage to break through (a lot of half breaks) but his decision to run more and pass less, stymied clean opportunities for his outside men to attack. It was obvious that the sun and swirling conditions were causing problems with the high ball but it was equally obvious that Moylan, determined to keep mistakes to a minimum, was being overly cautious, under the bomb, and let the ball bounce far too often.

Cartwright too, was indecisive and failed to get into any sort of rhythm with his ball playing. He tried hard but appeared to lack direction and was well below his best with uncharacteristic handling errors and lack of penetration. Hopefully he did enough in defence, which was very solid, to keep his representative aspirations alive. Peachey did what Peachey does and despite virtually gifting the game to the Titans at the death, probably showed enough as a strike weapon to keep his name in the mix.

Merrin played his customary grafting role in attack and was everywhere in defence. Despite playing far too flat offensively, he still managed to grind out plenty of valuable metres. He is a very powerful runner but needs to take a page out of Suaia Matagi’s book and give himself more depth to get up a head of steam.

All the forwards played well, the loss had nothing to do with them. They attacked the big Gold Coast pack with plenty of aggression and were rock solid in defence. Leilani Latu was a standout but Yeo, RCG and McKendry also turned in strong displays.

Wallace and Soward were two of our best, had we won Sowie probably would have earned MoM honours. DWZ scored a spectacular opportunist try but unfortunately didn’t get the number of opportunities his immense talent deserves. With Peta Hiku out for the season, we could do a lot worse than picking DWZ in the centres. From memory, he’s only played First Grade there a couple of times and was outstanding on both occasions. A ¾ line which includes Jennings (scored a double on Sat.), Blake and DWZ would certainly redress the perception that our backs lack the necessary pace needed to match it with the competition frontrunners.

It’s hard enough to cope when you lose to a team that’s better than you but it’s positively galling when you throw away what should have been a comfortable victory, to a team that’s not. To the Gold Coast’s credit, they showed the benefit of application over ability and deserved their win, if for no other reason than the fact that they competed for the full 80 minutes.

You obviously didn't watch the 20's game Griggsy. 28-24 win for the Panthers and very lucky to get it. The point I'm making is, any team can have an off day.
Given that Cleary (1/2), Edwards (FB) and May (5/8 lock) were all promoted to the reserve-grade certainly didn't help but it wasn't pretty, I can tell you, which just goes to show that even red-hot Premiership front-runners can put in a shocker.

I'm not sure how the selectors will play it after this lucky (but well earned) escape. What's the priority, break every NYC record by retaining the same side week in, week out, or punt the best players up the food-chain when they're ready and replace them with the S.G.Ball stars?

Nice problem to have but a problem all the same.

Shazza, it ain't no perception our backs are slow, it's a reality. They are quite pedestrian. A centre combination of Yeo and Peachey is not good at all. Not Yeo's fault he is really a back rower and a good one at that. From 1 -7 we are very slow. DZW looks like he is a little bit quick, but no true speedster. Our forwards are reasonably mobile and agile, but we really could do with a bit more pace in our backs.

You need speed and deception to make yourself actually look quick, you need to get your defender on his heels. In our backs only Peachey and Moylan do that. So I agree with the pedestrian part.
They say forwards win matches and backs decide by how much. This year we have been on top of opponents more than just about any other team, we just can't break away - our backs just aren't scoring the tries needed to break away. ( Stats say we have been in the oppositions half and quarter more than any other team)
I think we need a Mbye, Milford, Austin, Norman or Barba type of player at 5/8, that would go a long way to remedying our attack problems. I mentioned those guys because they were bought by their relative clubs, cheap.
My personal opinion is I think we have the best pack in the comp and if it is not the best this year, it definitely will be next year. But our two big purchases over the last two seasons, Merrin and Tamou. Both are forwards, Our recruitment has no interest in X factor players. And funnily enough our club just doesn't seem to produce many of that type of player. The last one that came through our juniors was Wesser. And he was a Nth Queenslander.
So we are probably going to bring back Blake, 1 try 7 games. Great!!
I complain about Wallace all the time on this forum but if I was in the coaches position I would be playing him as well. It's just a shit that the club has put themselves in a position where they have no quality backs as a backup. Got a million forwards but from round 1 this forum is full of suggestions of who to put next in the backs. At some points in yesterday game we had Yeo, Peachey and Cartwright in the backs. Worst thing is, that was about right, that was probably our best options at the moment. Gee I wonder why we looked like a rabble when attacking the Titan,s line.

Final comment on that game, as much as I hate Cameron Smith, With his ability to get in the Ref's ear and speed up and slow down matches, we would of won that game easy. I hate the shit he does but in reference to that we always play so dumb.

Awful, awful, awful, awful...

$30 to watch that garbage, how infuriating.

We spent an eternity scoring a try but as soon as we did the Gold Coast village joke club scored a shitty soft try almost immediately.

Why didn't Peachey drop onto the ball at the end of the game? Why?!?!

Easy two points down the drain.Players like Moylan obviously felt distracted by the origin period looming, must have already known he was picked.

Also, was it Latu or Matagi that practically killed Bird? One almighty clusterf*ck of a hit is required if you want to legally concuss a player just by tackling the body.Latu was outstanding again, hold your head up high mate.

It did seem like an off day for all concerned, our under 20's side only won by four points ffs.

And i only just found out a moment ago, but due to the performance displayed i don't care about it that much.Would have been 18-6 and we'd probably have started to pull away from them, but...i don't know...i'm too pissed off to think straight probably, but anyone that still opposes the fact that we get more incorrect decisions against us than for, then please, try and still argue in favour of this bullshit we keep receiving.

Now to detract from that otherwise people will start to get the wrong message out of this post...we still should have flogged them...by a huge amount.

Congrats to Moylan and Mansour...hopefully everyone wakes up for the next game.

The season so far has highlighted a lot of glaring weaknesses across the park in both attack and defence.
Some not so glaring.
Particular players are inconsistent for 1st grade football.

A trained eye can highlight these areas and rectify them.
A trained eye will also know areas of weakness (individually) of opposition teams.

It's one thing to have structures in place, it's another thing to execute them.
Our execution on numerous occasions was terrible. If we got away with the W on the weekend it would've been a miracle victory.

There were obvious areas where the Titans targeted us and succeeded.
There were obvious areas to target the Titans and we failed.

Rugby league isn't rocket science. But, it can be fun to play/watch when you plan to pull down the pants of your opposition and it comes off.
The Titans players were the ones smiling after that game.

The team has 2 weeks to rectify these areas and also find areas of weakness in the Bellamy coached Storm.

When you get in front, it is so important to convert field position, possession and opportunities to extend your lead. We led on four occasions did we not and yet despite opportunities, field position and possession we did not extend our lead and take the game away from our opposition. All too familiar this season. Games there for the taking but not putting our opposition away.
