Cricket Australia has sacked head coach Mickey Arthur on the eve of the Ashes.
The former South Africa coach, whose contract was due to run until the end of the World Cup in March 2015, was informed of the decision over the weekend.
Arthur will be replaced by highly rated Queensland coach Darren Lehmann who is in England and has just completed a coaching stint with Australia A.

Arthur came in for heavy criticism for his role in standing down four players, including then vice-captain Shane Watson, during the Test tour of India in March for failing to complete performance feedback on time.

There has been a school of thought that the South African was not tough enough to oversee the generational change in the Australian team, and he has been made responsible for a team culture that has gone backwards this year.
The latest examples were David Warner’s twin run-ins with trouble - first on Twitter, then in a bar in Birmingham - which led to the opener being suspended until the first Test at Trent Bridge

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland was furious at Warner’s conduct and understood to be also angry at the handling of the bar-room affair - in which Warner punched England’s Joe Root - by team management.

The decision comes as all of Australia's squad converges for the first time in Taunton in England on Monday, for their first pre-Ashes tour match, against Somerset beginning on Wednesday.

Arthur was one of the major appointments in the aftermath of the Argus Review, which was ordered after Australia lost the 2010-11 home Ashes series to England.

He was then coaching Western Australia but was selected after a worldwide search for the newly created head coach and selector position - former coach Tim Nielsen did not apply for it - on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Lehmann has proved popular as a batting coach of Australia A and in his trophy-winning stint in Queensland.

The 43-year-old, renowned as a shrewd thinker during his playing career of 27 Tests and 117 one-day internationals, has won the Sheffield Shield and one-day titles with the Bulls while also steering Brisbane Heat to the Big Bash League title.

Lehmann has also coached in the Indian Premier League with Kings XI Punjab and the defunct Deccan Chargers.

Cricket Australia's only immediate response was that an announcement would be made late on Monday, in conjunction with a media conference in Bristol. The latter will - tellingly - be attended by CA's chief executive James Sutherland and Arthur's direct boss, executive general manager of team performance Pat Howard.

The Ashes series begins on July 10.

Thumbs up from me.

Cricket in Australia is in a shambles. Since John Inverarity took over the whole game looks like it is being run by a bunch of doddering old men who seem to have no idea and I mean please the rotation system?

A bloke scores a ton and is rotated out and then re-instated a couple of games later and then does not last 10 minutes in the middle for the next few matches and is finally stood down due to poor form.

A bowler takes five for and is rotated out and then re-instated a couple of games later and then goes none for a hundred and suddenly finds that he can't land the ball on the next wicket let alone the current pitch and is finally stood down due to poor form.

A former Rugby Union player is appointed the games high performance director and his biggest claim to fame is to STOP cricket players playing cricket because their sleeping patterns are more important than the game.

I like the fact that Darren Lehmann is a recent player and a current coach who has not really been out of the game. I heard that John Inverarity still has his old 15 inch black and white Kriesler TV at home - it was good enough for 'The Don'it is good enough for me!

I fear We(Aussie's) are a train wreck that are going to crash into a five to zip mountain over the next two months, I hope Im wrong but all the ingredients are there for a thrashing at the hands of the poms. Come on Aussie, the poms having the ashes for too long seems unnatural to me!!!

No. The team in late 60's early 70's was terrible. The team through much of the 80's was terrible.
In cricket, as in most sports, the difference between a good team & a bad one is often 2 or 3 outstanding players. Most teams can carry a bunch of just regular players & the stars make the difference. Apart from M. Clark we don't have players of real world class. We have not been able to make the transition of having a number of truly outstanding players retire in recent years.

It will turn around & I think Arthur going is a start - the players can get back to playing cricket and not be distracted by home work and sleep patterns, and be able to overcome slight strains and bruises and still get out and do the job. I think CA has been spooked by the Bracken legal action and now want to wrap the players in cotton wool.

I wish Lehmann the best - he is a good guy, and and Aussie. If I was Prime Minister I would pass a law that major Australian national sporting teams had to have an Aussie coach. No more Proteas coaching our cricket team, no more Kiwis coaching the Wallabies :) :) :)

This ^^ is spot on Mr Walker.....ha haaa go figure Mr Walker :woohoo:

Anyway, I have an issue with our Test top order being a real chance of being 2 for zip in most games, this pyjama shit that is finished in a couple of hours is killing Test cricket.

Jimmy Anderson will own Warner and Hughes, you cannot play a class bowler like him with a preconceived idea of where you want to hit the ball......Cowboys IMO ;)

Boof being made Coach is the biggest positive we could have for the Ashes, I'm just not sure how he and the big C will get on, much like the Sydney Test where Kat slapped his face, Boof won't cop any premadonna crap, work hard, play hard and enjoy the results, simpe game plan.

I am more excited about the Ashes now than I was last week, happy players will produce the goods, we just need a staunch top 4.

Darren Lehmann is taking over a team with no opening batsman in form. The entire top 6 is not in any great form and this is a carry over from a dreadful Indian tour. The lead up is once again a joke and may be a country administration problem. Compare the lead up the English and Irish Lions had before Sat night. Games v Force, Reds, Country,Waratahs, Brumbies teams. The Australian rugby team had no games. The cricket team will most likely have 2 games to get some practice in.

Clarke is the only really good batsman in the team. The rest are inconsisitent bordering on ordinary.

Ed Cowan, Chris Rodgers, Phil Hughes, Shane Watson and David Warner (if selected). Usman Khawaja has a better chance now Lehmann is coach. The backup is so thin that George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell and Steve Smith may be used as specialist batsman.

What happened to hit such a low point. We can also get rid of the Rotation policy, John Inverarity and Pat Howard and the fitness gurus telling bowlers when to bowl and when to rest taking valuable depth out of state cricket and making run scoring for easier for the lesser players.

The reason our top 6 are so poor is because their all facing the new pill. If we could manage at least 1 for 100 consistently and that being both openers scoring more than 20 each (and not in the first 5 overs) then our middle order will improve.

Nothing worse for a team's morale than number 6 being padded up before lunch on the 1st day.

Similar to our own halfback issue, they've got all the shots, but a lack of ticker to dig in and do what's needed leaves the team wanting. If either one of the Cowboys had the patience of Ed Cowan, they would tip the 1,000 runs a year easily, as Clarkey does.

I also think not having a top class spinner is another issue, sure we have a few OK slow bowlers, but you need that something from your spinner to make batsmen want to avoid facing them. The current Googly is the one that bouncers off the boundary fence in the wrong direction :P
