Refereeing in the modern game

Well after 2 rounds we see that the officiating hasn’t improved, with the only change being the cancellation of the regular Monday Annesley excuse event.

In our game, there was a clear forward final pass for a chooks try not picked up. Take a look at how far behind the play the touchie was! It wasn’t a try from a long range high speed run with the flaggie being left behind, they were just not up with the play. Maybe the EO policy should consider factors of fitness to carry out duties.

The fiasco in yesterday’s game where there was a clear forward pass that Stevie Wonder would have seen was not called resulting in a ‘try’ was embarrassing to the game. Further embarrassment came when the bunker used another incident on that play to find a reason to rule NO TRY, as they could see the forward pass but can’t rule on a clear breach, but can make up a reason for NO TRY for something that would never have resulted in NO TRY in any other circumstance.

Another worry that has now become endemic is the change after 100 years on awarding of penalty tries. They’ve changed from an absolute 100% certainty of the try being scored as the criteria, to a more likely than not basis. Glad they’re not ruling on capital punishment cases. Officials demonstrate every week that their judgement is very variable, and this adds a further dimension to their influence of the run of the game & possibly the result.

And don’t get me started on the lottery of the “guess agains”.

This is my bug bear, when I want to ping the refs, I try and be as unbiased as possible. I was gob smacked with the Manly v Warriors game, no care about the result (other than having try scorers for both sides lol) I like Adam Gee as a ref, but there must be a message to these guys to try and keep it entertaining, The warriors got at least 4 x 6 agains (love it mrwalker guess agains) in the 1st 20min and most of them were on the 4th tackle…all you get on the tele is ruck infringement or inside the 10. It was a joke if you ask me and cost Manly any hope of momentum after the 1st try was like taking candy from a baby.

Has anyone else noticed the one metre marks on the field seemed to have disappeared? Is this turning into union with free reign on forward passes?

regarding Forward Passes being claimed too hard to rule on, players all wear state-of-the-art GPS locators making their location on the field for team analysis. It’s not hard to also use that live data to mark their position on the field.

What are people’s thoughts on the current state of refereeing, in particular what seems to be a crackdown on high shots & shoulder charges?

To me it looks like an overreaction to the Tigers game from a few weeks ago.

From our game last night there were 6 players put on report for these offences. I don’t think any were really that bad. A month ago they all would have been let go.

While on the subject, since when is a knee to the head of a try scorer not a penalty? Yes it was accidental, but was still a knee to the head.

When the media refer to you by a first name or nickname, you know that you’re on a winner (untouchable).

As for Penrith, two dropped balls in the play-the-ball says it all. Just no attention to detail. And I didn’t see much, if any, penetration by the forwards; too small, compared to all our opponents. But if Sommerton didn’t butcher his try by having his own arm under the ball, the tone of the game might have changed completely.

I have watched a couple of games dispassionately this round.
Some of my observations:

6 (Guess) again has no place in the game. If there is an infringement a penalty should be awarded and the offence made obvious. With guess again the offence is, yes, anybody’s guess.

In the lead up to Vegas all the talk was about “Gladiatorial Contest”. A couple of months later and you can barely tackle an opponent without invoking the wrath of the referee. Pretty soon we will need bigger bins to house the sinners. I am reminded of when i was a youngster and soccer was a contact sport. I did not like the progression there and I fear we may be going down the same path.

Retrospective intervention by the bunker - seriously?

A few years back I almost gave up following rugby league because of the refereeing; my blood pressure could not cope. Either I will have to give the game away or up my medication.

According to ABC commentators this afternoon, there have been more players put on report & sin binned in this round than at any time in the history of the game. Not sure if there is a way for me yo check it, but it wouldn’t surprise me given how things went this weekend.

Commentators spend more time talking about the refereeing than calling the game.

It’s an absolute farce !

I could pick the eyes out of sooooooo many moments, but the glaring indicator is, How the F didn’t Yeo go to the bin? Yes Turbo was falling etc etc…but he hit him flush, with force and I think broke his nose, he was bleeding from both nostrils…SERIOUSLY what the F

I simply use the above reference to validate the situation as a Panther fan.

On our game, she simply could not keep up with the speed of play, when the ball was in play for any length of time, dodgy penalties were called, the 1st Captains challenge…it was blatantly clear, when the camera pans around, she is red roar in the cheeks and puffing hard. What are the NRL thinking?

I think I will just stick to watching Penrith games…

Also conversely… how the hell was Sorrensen sent off. He didn’t lead in with the shoulder but rather absorbed the momentum of the attacker, he was stationary.

There were so many send offs that made no sense this weekend, and a whole bunch that should have happened but didn’t

But I don’t blame the refs for this. I blame the confusing messaging from higher ups in the league that should have no business interfering with the rules of the game.

Agree Steve

Further to this, and I’m going on a rant…I have the opinion that Refs have an agenda these days, i’m sure the message comes from above about being in the entertainment game, need contests not blow outs bla bla bla…The Melbourne game proved exactly what i’ve been saying. In commentary after Melbourne scored, Andrew Johns says “Did you hear that (we the viewer didn’t) the ref just told his touchies to watch out for the quick passing to the other side after the kick off” to which Gould says “Yer the refs have to do their homework on teams to know what to expect”.

What a F@#$ing JOKE - Makes me want to give the game the flick. A Referee should NOT go into a game with a pre conceived expectation of how the game should go, they should simply adjudicate what is in front of them…UNBIASED - This player name association also boggles my mind, every ref needs to know every players name…CAN SOMEONE PUNCH ME IN THE FACE :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Good to see someone from the NRL admitting that things have gone too far. Whether it will change anything remains to be seen.

While Abdo conceded the fact, as I mentioned earlier, I’m sure that’s the level where this direction is coming from.

First 2 games of Magic Round see that the refs/bunker are working to a different set of rules than last week!!!

There were several high contacts last night that would have led to penalties, ‘on reports’ & sin binning if they were last week.

Abdo announced there would be no changes, but clearly something changed.

Let’s see what today brings.

Also note the broadcasters did not repeatedly show replays of anything slightly controversial.
Nor did the commentators draw to our attention to any as they have in the past.
Does that mean they were shut up by the NRL???

Yes noted the lack of replays. Perhaps yes instruction from NRL to reduce criticism?? Or maybe the replays don’t work north of the tweed :flushed:

On the commentators, can’t comment as I watch without sound as I am not interested in ‘experts’ opinions
