Hey Penrith… does Ashley Klein’s wife need a job?
That was a good, tough game. It could have gone either way. It’s interesting how much more you see when you watch the replay on Kayo and freeze-frame the contentious incidents. Some key moments for us would include :-
When Klein’s name came up as the ref, we knew we would be up against it.
Laurie’s dropping ball that led to the first Melbourne try was surely worth a look on replay by Klein, since Grant’s knees seemed to be partly to blame for the drop.
The hit on Cleary half that brought Tago in and led to the first Melbourne try, was another bad call.
Cleary’s missing of the early, easy conversion.
Melbourne kicking to To’o’s wing, exposing him to taller opponents – 2 tries.
When Laurie made a break down the right side in the first half, and was stopped by Papenhuyzen, surely Laurie was tripped when he moved to the right.
The one-on-one strip on an early tackle near our line.
The high shot on Cleary, in goal, that was deemed OK by the ref.
Kenny made a few too many mistakes to earn MOM points.
Toelau’s miss on Wishart on our line, followed soon after by dropping the ball on their line, proved expensive.
Laurie is still diamonds and stones. You’d hope that he’d get rid of a few of the stones.
C. Smith might have retired, but Melbourne’s hooker and half must still think that they have refereeing rights. They were constantly in Klein’s ear.
You’d think that Fisher-Harris would have enough experience to not risk a penalty in front of the posts, especially with Klein. Other refs would have let it pass, but it was a game-breaker.
Better late than never as I am waiting todays game.
From that very first try I knew we were up against it - the grub of the storm, and the that the script had been written my the Ref, bunker, media and NRL.
First try a blatant obstruction - not just on Cleary but Edwards, second (or was it a third) was less obvious but 9/10 times would of gone up stairs for a call of knock on in goal.
We played with heart, and yes made mistakes, and unfortunately we all know what happened to Cleary to all but end a chance of a miracle win.
That said Edwards stood up and took a shot from the touch line 40m out, which sadly fell inches short, albeit in line with the black stripe.
I was proud of our boys, yet the anger at how the result was managed still resonates with me a week later. I haven’t seen anything so bad since the first half of the 2020 grand final.
Vent over - onwards with the game today
