I think Talagi stays at 6 and Cogger is chosen on the bench as the utility.
I think the player with most to lose from Cogger’s return is Trent Toelau. He’s elevated into the NRL squad in 2026 and, with Schneider gone, had the chance to make the utility spot his own. He still does, but the competition just got a lot tougher. Cogger’s on a 3 year contract, which indicates the club has significant plans for him.
True, but Lindsay Smith, Liam Henry & Scott Sorensen are free to negotiate for 2027 from Nov 1st. It’d be a big hole if we lost one, two or all of them.
I think it’s more a long term replacement for Nathan. I’m not 100% sure he extends his contract beyond 2027. In that case we better start grooming a new halfback.
Cogger has already been in the system and knows the ropes, so it’s not hard to get him up to speed. He, like many players imported into the system had thrived.
Don’t be surprised if his signing has a long term strategy in mind.
Steve, you’re scaring me. It seems like you’re speaking with some authority here. Please tell me its just gut feel rather than someone actually telling you something!
Nathan is an elite athlete, and he is always looking for a challenge. There will be a time when Penrith or even Rugby League eventually doesn’t offer him that challenge.
I’m just being real here. Penrith should be thinking about legacy, we can take that batten and keep this era of dominance going, or we can hold on this moment and watch it slowly slip away. Ivan doesn’t seem like the guy that is devoid of a plan.
We should try to hold onto Nathan as long as we can, but we should also have one eye on the future in my opinion.
I also rate Jack Cogger, in our system I could see him in the #7 jersey in the future. It all starts with bringing back to Penrith.
