As the finals drew closer, the final ‘best’ 17 became an interesting thinking point.
I suggest that 16 are locked in, and the final spot, on the bench, the only variable.
In past few finals campaigns we had injury concerns with 1 or both halves, and IC elected to go with a #14 as cover. This time around we don’t have any apparent similar issue & so perhaps a different strategy this time.
So perhaps we will go without Schneider & perhaps include Patea on an all forwards bench, or Alamoti who never lets us down? Or perhaps an X-factor with Laurie. Having the versatility of Garner is a big plus & assists in looking at options.
In the end we will all back Ivan to come up with the best option
You could always bring Paul on in the centres, shift Tago for a 20 minute spell in the second row to give Martin or Sorro a break.
Same reasoning behind Garner on the bench, can cover the second row and can shift to the centres to cover all the back 5 if needed. Garner to even cover Kenny, he couldn’t go any worse than BS did last week.
I’m not sure anyone on here can argue the defense of Schneider, he is no Mitch Kenny, but he certainly won’t let you down when it comes to putting the body on the line. May not be the most dynamic player, but I’m OK with him at 14 for the dual purpose potential. Alamotti has to be in for his kicking, Milky has done nothing wrong that I can see.
Well not quite the 17 I was expecting. Alamoti deserved a spot, but Milky is unlucky to miss out. Kenny will be missed for sure, his 50 tackles in the middle, ability to play big minutes & his service from DH have been instrumental in our game for past few campaigns. His being out may have lead to our bench being as it is??
In any case, I can only back IC - he hasn’t put too many steps wrong since mid 2019.
We are in uncharted territory, but we’ve given ourselves a chance to make history. It may or may not happen, but it’s been an incredible ride. I will be disappointed if we don’t progress to next week
It’s funny how success can breed expectation. I don’t want to lose, don’t get me wrong, but I remember the “good o’l days” when we would have given our right nut to be in the finals, let alone going for 5 straight!
I have full faith in our system and expect to progress this week as a minimum. But I am also humbled by being a Panther fan given the success to date.
There has been a few mentions of the soul-searching session after the Bathurst debacle. That reminds me of the Joel Clinton spray in 2003 that seems to have been the catalyst to a complete season turnaround and ultimate success.
Well of we win tomorrow we would be booking in a Semi Final with the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium.
Crichton will be out, Kikau isn’t 100%. Opportunity knocks.
