Farewell Penrith Park

Farewell to Penrith Park

This week marks the end of an era as we host our final regular season match at Penrith Park.

Since the Panthers’ inaugural home game on April 8, 1967, at 3 pm—a game that saw our first top-grade victory against the Newtown Jets—Penrith Park has been woven into the very fabric of our club’s identity.

The upcoming game against the Titans will be the 650th and last regular season match at this iconic venue before renovation works commence. We anticipate returning in 2026 or perhaps 2027.

This stadium has been the backdrop to some of our club’s most triumphant and challenging moments—a steadfast presence through every season. It’s more than just a venue; it’s home.

This thread is dedicated to your memories of Penrith Park. Please share your stories and experiences of this special place that has meant so much to us all.

Having attended somewhere between 250 & 300 games since 1990, there’s so many memories to sift through.

Probably the most enduring memory is the friendships I have made over the years. From an introverted kid from the Shire, not knowing anyone from the area, and travelling around 2 hours (before the M7 was built) each way to get to games, I’ve always felt welcomed amongst my fellow Panther fans.

Becoming a season ticket holder in 2001, I have had a group that I sat with every week. While some of the faces have changed over the years, we have had 6 of us together for the entire time, and another 2 since 2004.

Through the old PI & this forum, as well as some of the Facebook groups, I have made a number of other friends who sit in different parts of the ground, and I have a chat to on a regular basis.

I’m going to miss it until we are back.

My earliest memories were watching the pennies in the 80’s and thinking how tough Matt Goodwin was, he would always be dirt from head to toe.

At half time the ute would drive around and the cheer girls would throw minties into the crowd, back in those days it was concrete all round lol many a time you would have bark off you trying to score a minty ha ha haaaa those were the days. Also sliding down the back of the hill, someone would always find some cardboard, luckily the fence was there to stop you.

I was lucky enough, and of course old enough now, to have been going to Penrith Park since 1967.

I was interviewed by Troy Dodds of WW for the paper last week. It covers some of my experiences/memories. I will try and post the link here:

Anyway, the Panthers and Penrith Park, and the two leagues clubs have been an integral part of my life. Made friends. lost friends… a lot of happiness and sadness, but truly a life experience.

Cheers

EDIT: looks like link didn’t work - someone smarter than me on such things may be able to fix it :open_mouth: [All Good. Fixed the link. ~ST]

A day 58 years in the making. I think it is going to be very emotional. Loved seeing the reports and videos thru the last few weeks. The memories and the tributes have been wonderful.

Going to club for a pre-game drink and early dinner before venturing across the road. Been excited since getting up this morning.

Come home from the ground, we have won the game, we are 2nd and into the finals. Yet a certain sadness befalls me with the realisation that was my last home game of the season, after 40 odd years of calling Penrith Park my second home.

Treating myself to a single malt while I quietly reflect, my take take on the game will wait till tomorrow
