Disappointing that a gambling company has taken over from our iconic Oak. Would rather it have been a different company but business is business I guess.
I agree that itâs a bad look to replace wholesome milk with a gambling company.
although they probably couldnât afford it, how good would it be to see Mountain Culture (brewery) on our jersey? (No affiliation, just like their beer and reckon their name rocks!)
Given the role gambling plays in many social problems, Iâm really disappointed to see the strength of the association between the Panthers & gambling - Bluebet Stadium, and now the upgrade of Picklebetâs sponsorship to prominence on the jersey. Maybe we should just change the name from âPanthersâ to âPicklebetsâ and be done with it.
To be fair when Parlamat was sold to Lactalis they stated OAK Milk would not extending the sponsorship beyond what was agreed prior to the sale.
I think that was due to expire at the end of this season. I could be wrong with that as most of that happened behind closed doors, but I believe thats what happened.
I agree with the sentiment re a gambling sponsor, it was a deflated âOh Reallyâ when i read that.
Unfortunately, Gambling companies only need a very small % of the market to be a massive deal. I would love to be able to turn off gambling for 1 month, imagine the pain these companies would feel if everyone just didnât gamble for 1 entire month. A December amnesty, buy a present with the money you plan to punt.
The most disappointing thing out of it is the impact on all the little kids watching the Panthers. Iâve never seen so many little boys and girls proudly wearing their panthers jerseys all over the place as I have these past 4-5 years - all those kids are going to see Picklebet now on all the gear their heroes wear. Yes the kids gear doesnât have sponsors ads but the young kids are going to see it on TV and at games - an insidious way to advertise to our kids.
But asking the Panthers to take a stand while the rest of the league doesnât only disadvantages the Panthers, so I get it. I wouldnât mind a law like they have in NZ to ban gambling advertisements on gear.
Iâd be interested to see what happens with merch sales, we were top of the pops last year. I wonder if families will talk with their wallets about this new sponsor. If we go from hero to zero in merch $$, that may create some intense convos at board level.
I should also reference, I will not be buying a Picklebet Jersey !
The commercial reality of running an NRL club is that you need money, including from sponsorship & there are just so many businesses in a position to put big dollars into sponsorship.
Gambling companies are one group who have the dollars and see value in investing it into professional sport. Would it be better if we didnât need money from such businesses? Yes, but it doesnât exist and so the reality is that our club has to do itâs best - in this case with Picklebet.
I have had a TAB account for years & also a Sportsbet account, not as a result of them sponsoring sport, but because they were the options. I have not gone ahead and joined other newer gambling organisations because they sponsor sport or had naming rights for our stadium etc.
I will be wearing my 2026 jersey, Picklebet and all, and have bought one already as the 60th season one will join my others, as it marks my 60th season supporting My Panthers!!
All power to you mrwalker, I have no issue with any of your points. I too have the same betting accounts, the Sportsbet one was created the day the TAB account went down at the JamoâŚ..So I opened (my now preferred) sportsbet account.
Anyway, I consider myself a fairly powerful person in terms of mindset, always worrying about my own personal situation, i.e. drinking & gambling being the big 2. I have a budget each week and more often than not remain within that budget. I also take a month off every year from the drink. BUT I am not blind to the fact, I am a mindset change from being addicted to these 2 socially accepted habits. As with Smoking, Gambling is an abhorrent addiction for those who cannot control it, having it in our faces on such a regular basis contradicts the message with each advertâŚ..âYou lose more than you win, if you have a gambling problem call this numberâ etc etc - In my humble opinion, we (as a society not just the Pennies) could do without the in your face gambling ads that do more harm than goodâŚâŚjust like smoking !
My question is - which potential sponsors missed the cut and by how much i.e. $$ sponsored. Question for the pride: Would you accept 10% less per year on the major sponsor deal for say Sanyo or to maintain OAK if it were on the table?
