This season is mirroring that infamous 2019 season. Ivan eventually debuted the next wave of kids. The problem here is, there isn’t exactly anyone demanding to be selected in reserves. Patea an exception. The middle forwards are going okay, its the outside backs that just can’t seem to get it done.
It was a great run. Thank you for the last five years, it has been amazing.
Perhaps we can now work towards being competitive again when we get our home ground back in two years.
Joey Manu wants a release from Rugby to come home. Backend a contract to the shithouse and get him Penrith.
Gotta say, I disagree with the “it wasn’t our forwards” comments, I base our entire result on the work ethic of our forwards. Yes Moses was better this week, but I still cannot fathom Lindsay Smith thinking he is a playmaker…is he scared? When Fish left, I honestly thought Lindsay would step up, but I have not seen him with effort into the defense and a quick play the ball.
Don’t get me started on Henry, wouldn’t be surprised if he is on the sidelines for a couple of weeks with that head drive into the player on the ground…didn’t know he was such a loose unit.
Yeo being benched speaks volumes !
I am also glad IC has said that is why Blaze needed time, he has the want and skillset, but based on last night isn’t up to NRL standard yet. Jenkins back to reggies, Casey to wing Garner to defend in centres next to Casey.
That play from the scrum on the 1st tackle broke us, stupid play when you have them on the ropes, next set bin, then try…funny how structure is lost when your thoughts are focused elsewhere, we need to score, we need to win etc etc
AGAIN (the result is not his fault) but the refereeing was atrocious, they were pumped just as bad as us, but managed to defend the bad call…WE USED TO DO THAT !!!
The part I found the most worrying was the ‘hesitation’ both in attack and defence.
The players in attack doing it as well are not the rookies, it’s more experience players like Dylan and Nathan holding a pass a little too long. Where our passing was smooth and fast in past years, there is a slight double guessing of their action and it gives the defence an easy read on the play. To me this either come down fro a lack of communication or a lack of trust.
In defence, players are not sliding in unison… creating gaps (particularly on the wings. There was a few occasions that Tago just didn’t slide with the line, leaving Alamoti with 2 players to defend, one that lead to a try as it didn’t matter what action Alamoti took, they both ended with a Dolphin scoring.
Before we start working on Attack and Defence we should start with Trust and Communication.
Also to those on social media who say “we need to get back to how we were”, I say no. This is’t the 2021 side, and we have a new crop of players, we need to fin a new groove and work out how the system adapts to that. Because if we are unable to adapt, we are dead in the water.
Yeo “Results will come but it needs to happen sooner rather than later”
Refreshing and open chat with Yeo after the game - mentions fatigue being a factor
A big concern is that it will now be difficult to get fans to travel to Parramatta stadium, particularly on Thursday and Friday nights. I fear that the crowd numbers will not be good unless they start winning games.
Hit the nail on the head Steve, Nathan is trying to slow his game to suit because of this. Trust is earned not given…this is where we miss Luai, not afraid to call people out for missing their position in attack, Nath is too nice on the field.
A good example of Nathan being off his game was the cut out pass to nobody. Alamoti was involved in the previous tackle and was rushing to get back to position, it was impossible for Paul to be in position for that cut out pass.
What needed to happen was for Cleary to check and pivot or for the player to his right to shift out to fill in the spot where Alamoti would have been.
It’s just little errors like those that brought us undone, we are our own worst enemy out there. We clean this up and we can get on with winning some games.
If SOO is picked on players form we wont be losing too many this year!!!
Kevin I think you’ve hit the nail on the head…our forwards aren’t dominating…really miss the presence of JFH…Moses played pretty well on Thursday night and I liked the urgency he showed in scoring the try the other forwards were disappointing…we also miss the Spencer Lenui style impact off the bench.
Smith is a good player but he’s no JFH…if Liam Henry could control his aggression and stop giving stupid penalties away that would help also. I’d be putting Luron Patea on the bench for an extended run give him a chance to show what he can do.
If the forwards carry the ball forward with intent and purpose (without giving silly penalties away) it just lays the platform for the backs to do their thing. Basic stuff really.
Agree with much of what has been posted above. Very disappointing display all around.
Our edge defence is in disarray this year, with the opposition just running through seemingly unchecked. Good defence is based on confidence of the guy inside & outside of you - this is missing & once their is a lack of confidence it’s hard to get that back. We had 2 centres in the team but played with 2 wingers on our left side??
Again, I’m not sure on Papali starting for Smith? There must be some plan there, but it’s not working.
The close range try to the fishies, came on a 50/50 penalty, followed by a string of guess agains until finally NC made a poor second man tackle on Kerr, already held by Martin, when he came in low also, allowing an easy off-load for the try.
I suggest that this was Nathans worst game for a long time. His kicking was not even close to his standard. Clearly, we had done our homework on their #1 who is close to the worst short kick defending FB in the game, but it seemed to dominate our thinking. What the hell was the ‘bomb’ on the first tackle from the scrum??
It is going to take a while to de-Parra Talagi for sure. I really can’t see what he brings, and, from the time we signed him I watched him, and I have not seen much to be excited about.
Again, I didn’t see anyone not trying, and perhaps as I said last week, we are trying too hard. Our timing is off in attack, with a number of routine passes being behind the mark, causing players to pause to take the pass. One was the pass to Dylan on the right-side swing that had Alamonti bundled into touch. If the pass had been spot on, I suggest the try would have been scored.
On Dylan, first game back, the effort plays are still there. He made the tackle on the right sideline & then was there in the left corner to almost stop the try on the next play.
All that said, I haven’t given up hope. This year the games are all over the place, and, with everyone beating each other who knows how the ladder will be after Rd 27. Our destiny is in our own hands.
Onwards & upwards.
I thought it was interesting having 2 wingers on the left. Perhaps they can’t play both sides? In which case, one of them should have been omitted, with someone who can play both sides brought in.
Me either, I was stopped at the shops yesterday by 4 different people, I was obviously wearing my penrith kit, telling me how dire it is for us, i simply said, just giving everyone a head start so we can really challenge ourselves…4 in a row and some people are saying it’s getting boring
