Looking at history & records

Our win over the Roosters was the 50th consecutive time we have gone on to win after leading at half time.

I know it’s a bit early, but with us having the minor premiers all but sewn up, I thought I’d look at the records to see how we compare to teams of the past.

Souths in 1951 had an 11 point lead, with a 91.67 win rate & 191 differential.

Souths in 1925 & Easts 1975 both had 10 point leads, Souths also being undefeated.

Souths in 1926 had a 9 point lead.

We are currently one of nine teams to have an 8 point lead (in order of win percentage):

St George 1959 (undefeated)
Panthers 2022 (season still in play)
Easts 1935
Balmain 1917
St George 1958
Easts 1974
Melbourne 2006
Manly 1983
Parramatta 1982

Barring a major collapse, I’d imagine we should maintain, or possibly improve our lead, and go down as one of the most dominant seasons in history.

The only teams named above who did not go on to win the premiership were Manly in 1983 & Melbourne in 2006!!!

Heard earlier that our win on Friday night made us the first club in history to win 20+ games in 3 consecutive seasons.

Possibly another record to come our way.

By my (albeit estimate) calcs, we should have two players in contention for Dally M player of the year - Yeo and Edwards.

That said, it usually goes to a less successful team with one player who stands above the pack. This year the competition likely to include Hunt and DCE.

When voting closed Yeo was in front, with Edwards 2 points behind him

And Ivan is quoted as saying that if resting Edwards and Yeo costs them the Dally M he will buy them a beer.

What does that mean the NRL has to get Gower? A keg?

With us qualifying for our 3rd consecutive Grand Final, I thought I’d run an eye over other teams who have achieved this (or greater) in the past:

Souths 1908-10. Won 1908-9 (1909 won by forfeit)

*Easts won 1911-3. 1911 was only finals match.

*Balmain won 1915-7. 1916 was only finals match.

Souths 1926-9 (would have had 1923-9 if a final had been played in 1925). Won 1926-9 (and 1925 as minor premiers).

Easts 1934-6 (would have had 1934-8 if a final had been played in 1937). Won 1935-7.

Balmain 1944-8. Won 1944 & 1946-7.

Souths 1949-55. Won 1950-1 & 1953-5.

St George 1956-66. Won 1956-66.

Wests 1961-3. No premierships.

Souths 1967-71. Won 1967-8 & 1970-1.

Parramatta 1981-4. Won 1981-3.

Canterbury 1984-6. Won 1984-5.

Canberra 1989-91. Won 1989-90.

Manly 1995-7. Won 1996.

Easts 2002-4. Won 2002.

Melbourne 2006-9. Won 2007 & 2009. (Premierships later stripped due to salary cap rorting).

Melbourne 2016-8. Won 2017.

Penrith 2020-2. Won 2021-2.**

*3 premierships without finals every year.

**EDIT: Result no longer pending.

Saw this on a Facebook page. Apparently it is a printing template from back in the 70’s.

Interesting to note that despite our losses & position, we are still the best defensive side, averaging 13,875 per game (1-2 points higher than last few years). Next best is Souths averaging 15.333 per game.
