TELSTRA PREMIERSHIP

OPPOSITION TEAM

Adam Gee is 1 ref that TRIES to let the game roll rather than critique the life out of it. Incidentals are not 6 agains and he doesn’t play the game of players manipulating the ruck.

Panthers x alot - I was gunna say 50 but the Dolphins will be up for this game

Gee is probably the best of a very bad bunch. Does not make him good, just better than the rest.

This game is quite significant. It’s a challenge playing up there, with the humidity (different to the drier heat of a Penrith summer). If we win, last week was just an aberration. If we lose, the talk becomes a lot darker. I was going to comment before last week’s shambles that our passing has been at a level above teams, with the receivers consistently being able to run onto the pass. But last week’s awful display was highlighted by the 5 or so passes that went to nobody. It will be interesting to see if IC has managed to bring some magic back into training.

No to mention TIO Stadium has some negative memories for Ivan Cleary. After we were dispatched by the Eels up there during Ivans first tenure at Penrith the infamous press conference with Elijah Taylor as captain and Ivan both fed up.

It led to Phil Could calling Ivan tired… which led to his sacking not long after. Thankfully sanity prevailed and Gus was shown the door and Ivan returned, now 4 premierships later.

NRL Updated Team List

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has updated his squad for Friday night’s Round 7 clash with the Dolphins at TIO Stadium in Darwin.

Solid first half. Would like to have been another try ahead with the possession & field position we have had.

Looks like Kenny has a broken leg after a dodgy tackle.

In to Golden Point. Almost everything went Dolphins way in second half. Both teams look out in their feet.

Cleary field goal, after Tago set up the field position.

The first half looked good, but not quite exceptional. Missed the first 25 of the second half, but man our completion rate was dreadful at the end. That 25mins must have been diabolical.

Only positive is the 2 points.

Not sure how many people caught the footage of Kenny stepping on his foot afterwards, but that was rather uncomfortable to watch. I’m no medical person and only caught a glimpse but it looked to me like feet and leg bones went different ways. :see_no_evil_monkey: I hope he is okay and has a speedy recovery.

Hope Edwards isn’t too bad.

Edit: Not for the faint of heart, but 28 seconds into this video: Horror injury suspected for Panthers hooker

I wish Kenny all the best.

Another example of how some poor teams lift when playing the 4 times premiers.

I’ll have more to say about the game itself later on but I feel this needs to be asked.

Why are we having games in Darwin this early in the season?

Almost 30°C and near 90% humidity… both teams looked absolutely gased near full time, a golden point match would not have been something either side would have wanted.

A lot of injuries late in the game as cramping, exhaustion and dehydration was setting in.

This game in Darwin would have been suited to June and July where at least the temperature would have been cooler.

The Fox commentary team said the same. Asked why a Darwin round would not be played in June.

So annoying listening to the idiot Ginnane and Walters commentating on the game. They were so excited when the dolphins were scoring. And so disappointed when Panthers caught up and then went on to win the game.

Spot on, Steve. Having spent decades living under canvas across the top end, I would suggest that such timing is medically ill-advised. And there’s no reason for it, except that the grass is more lush at the end of the wet.

I think that we all agree that the scheduling of this Darwin game was ludicrous. Hopefully, those responsible will desist in future years.

Stats can sometimes be deceptive, but the missed tackles stat (45, I think) told the story. That surely reflects absolute fatigue. I couldn’t understand the betting market before the game, giving little chance to Redcliffe. They were refreshed after a bye, more used to humid heat than us, and highly motivated after their recent performances (as were the Scumdogs last week). The scene was perfect for an ambush. It looks like we’re back to the future of recent years, whereby teams raise their game when they play us. Aside from that, Redcliffe have speed to burn in the backs, far more than us, and bigger forwards (starting and interchange). Call me paranoid, but I don’t see such unfavourable scheduling for us as accidental.

I wonder how IC will respond to Tago’s performance. Will he become a back row super sub? That would fit with our apparent preference for a smaller, more mobile interchange.

We are starting to see a mounting serious injury toll (Henry, Martin and now Kenny), something that we have mostly avoided over recent years. It could start to be a real problem. Does anyone know what is happening with Patea. He looked like being a regular part of the top 17 last year, but now runs around in reserve grade. Maybe Zakauri Clarke gets the nod soon. When we played Melbourne, his younger brother showed great pace and drive, almost running down Edwards, so hopefully speed is in the genes.

I watched the game of Ch 9, and the excitement when Recliffe scored was clear. The main commentator got so excited, I wondered if his voice had ever broken. The others were more controlled, but clearly showed the same sentiments. It reminded me of when we played Brisbane quite a few years ago, and the Ch 9 commentary team contained three ex-Brisbane players, and they commentated accordingly.

I think the enthusiasm for the Dolphins getting up in the second half by the commentary teams of Fox and Nine follows the formula of amping up “underdog” performances, something that gets a lot of interest from Aussie fans.

We have to accept we are the Goliath in the story now and not the David any longer.

When teams get up over us, commentators are going to amplify that.
