We must have one of the shortest set of backs in the NRL, and Easts will again use that advantage if we give them attacking kick options. We probably also have one of the slowest back lines in the NRL, which was ruthlessly exploited by Redcliffe with their long range tries. And our forwards must be one of the smallest packs in the NRL. So, when we stop paying attention to detail, as we have been doing in pretty well every game this year, we are set up to fail.
I think that Tago deserved to be dropped, but why only to the bench? That makes our interchange one of the smallest going around. And how does McLean stay in the centres, given his apparent inability to tackle reliably? Hopefully Talagi will start to demonstrate his supposed talent, and Henry will have been given a quiet few words by the coach about maturity. Finally, I’d prefer Patea to Papali’i. I wonder when the bookies start to make the opponents the favourites. Not confident for this game.
What did Jack Cole do wrong, other than getting knocked out?
Tago on bench is crazy, cannot stay that way.
Other than Papalii I still like our pack, just need effort from all and not just a few.
Starting to think our backline is slim picking when we keep picking a reserve grader in Jenkins, his last couple have been poor IMO. That defensive edge is going to be a problem if it stays like that.
Agree Pete, the confidence is not high given the team named…definition of insanity??
I agree with the comments above. I have had a thought of our centre make up - As long as Garner can move laterally his defence should plug the holes our opponents have been exploiting. For the other side, I wonder if Cleary should take a leaf out of his playbook with Burton, and give Schneider a run in the centres?
Been watching our Flegg and Cup teams today. Noticed there is an increased desire and effort in defence. Some of the try-savers these blokes have come up with today have been phenomenal.
Surely some of them will be breaking into first grade soon.
Streamed the Cup match. Yes, good win but roosters are perhaps not a good measuring stick.
I consider that there is an ever increasing gap between reggies & NRL. Some of the better players today have already played firsts this year.
I thought Geyer was good & maybe Luron may get a crack soon.
I would also add Asu Kepaoa to that list. He certainly knows how to find the try line. 14 tries from 7 appearances, the kid is averaging 2 tries a game. I wouldn’t mind seeing him outside Alamoti blitzing down the side line, could certainly help with out with our attack.
John Fonua was being talked up during the trials, and looked alright. My understanding is he can slot in anywhere in the backline too. Might be worth giving him a run too.
If we don’t win this week I would drop the whole team and bench to NSW cup and replace them with the NSW cup team that has won convincingly for the last two weeks.
That will only work if the opposition do likewise. There is a huge gap between NSW Cup & the NRL.
Looking at yesterday’s game, we see that Laurie, Cole, Toelau, Sommerton & Eiso have played NRL already this year and arguably they are not in our best 17 right now. They all played well yesterday as did some others, and they sit in first place, but that doesn’t mean that the team from yesterday would beat Manly in NRL or even Dogs NSW Cup next week.
The boys just need to dig themselves out of a hole, hopefully starting tonight.
I wasnt being serious about dropping the whole team but there are one or two that would benefit from a stint in reserve grade that said hopeful we can win tonight…lets go Panthers
Mr Walker - is the streamed coverage available somewhere (somewhere that does not require payment or logging in)? And is the Flegg streamed too? Thanks.
I’ve been watching the two lower grades home matches at Parker Street, just so that I can get a feeling of what winning feels like. Will it become contagious, or are we about to endure a season from the pits?
Any ideas of what IC sees in the younger McLean rather than his brother?
All NSWRL matches, including NSW Cup, Flegg & others can be streamed on BARTV. This is a follow-on from last year when RL were doing it themselves.
BARTV show usually 1 game for free (random which one it is - in Rd 1 it was the Panthers v Jet Cup game).
It costs $20 per month to subscribe & it says you can cancel anytime. You have to register on the website Rugby League on BarTV Sports
I just signed up yesterday in time to watch the game. The coverage was good, includes some play-by-play commentary & no expert comments (thankful for that). I watched the game live on my PC, but later downloaded the app on my phone & can cast to my TV.
I streamed a bit of the girls SF game earlier today from Parker St - picture & sound quality was good. I think for $5 per week of so, I will continue with it.
I don’t understand why the bookies keep having Panthers as favourites. I am sure this gets inside the heads of the young guys, thinking they will be easy games. They need to understand that they have to fire up to win.
