Penrith set to rest Cleary and other key players for Bulldogs clash

We are in play still for a possible top 4 finish (pending results going our way) but in IC we trust - seems like they don’t mind a bottom 4 finish; reading about it more it does mean we avoid Melbourne and Canberra in week 1

I think it’s a good move. It’s not impossible, but pretty unlikely that we could sneak into the top four, a bunch of results would have to go our way. And a home final doesn’t mean much, given that we’re playing out of Parramatta. So, to me it makes sense.

Cleary rested, hopefully Tago also rested, and maybe Martin - he’s looking pretty busted. While we’re at it, I’d rest Edwards & To’o as well. Edwards hasn’t been bad the last few weeks, but he’s made more errors than normal, and To’o could use a week off, he’s been playing busted for a while as well.

Besides, who’s to say we can’t beat the Dogs? We did all right over the Origin period with half the side out.

Agree Bryan, now that we are locked in to top 8, we are better off smashing the first finals game, then playing the loser of the top 4 smash up…..someone going out in straight sets  Imagine that, losing a top 4 game THEN having to play Penrith……D’oh - then just win 2 games for the Michelle

Well, one poster here had it right (apologies, can’t remember who it was) - IC has come up with a stroke of genius and RESTED THE WHOLE SIDE!

Gees, I can’t wait to read the coverage on this one, I expect everything from arrogant Panthers de-valuing the comp, disrespecting the Bulldogs, cheating the fans etc.

I think it’s a hoot! And, did I mention it’s a stroke of genius?!

They weren’t joking when they said they were resting a “few” players.

It will be an interesting discussion on NRL360 tonight.

I’ve noticed a few rival fans on Facebook already carrying on about it.

Simple fact is we’re here to win the premiership. To give ourselves the best opportunity to do that from the bottom of the 8, we need to go in to the finals rested.

The flip side of this is that the pressure is all on the Bulldogs to perform now. If they smash us, no one will raise an eyebrow. If we get close, or beat them, there will be serious questions asked about their premiership chances.

I think it’s pretty disappointing they have rested the entire first grade team. What about those families who have been saving up for weeks / months to get out and see their stars like Cleary, Martin, Edward’s, Yeo etc etc. What about those who have travelled? Some would have booked their tickets quite some time a go knowing it was going to be a top of the table clash.

I love the Panthers and think the rest will definitely help us moving into the finals but IMO this is not in the best spirit of the game.

Just watching the clowns on NRL360. They are more worried about the impact on the people gambling on the games, rather than the fans.

Although most of them agreed that resting the players is a good strategy for winning the premiership.

Did they mention Reece Walsh passing the ball after crossing the try line? that was the 3rd try to be scored as well, lots of people (me included) use the 1st, 2nd or 3rd try scorer to increase the value, this peanut would have cost plenty of people plenty of cash. I know it’s a gamble, but is something so blatant in the best spirit of the game?

Re the Pennies, this will also be an opportunity for IC to test the next level, who can handle the game, who can handle the adversity and more importantly who will step up and take the game on. The dogs will want to put 50 on us, are we capable of stopping that and or even beating them?

Yes, it was mentioned. Apparently it ruined their betting result.

Well, I’ve been copping it from a lot of “friends” (and I’m using that term very loosely at the moment) this week due to our team selection. As I’ve been telling people, it’s completely within the rules as they stand, and I don’t give a f@#% about your SuperCoach team.

Surprisingly the only friend I’ve found on my side is an Eels fan!!!

I’ve had a strange feeling all day that we are going to give a good showing of ourselves. Not saying we will win, but I think it may be a lot closer than many people are expecting.

That’s what I want, Mutley. I think it’s important that we give a good account of ourselves, and play with grit, heart and determination. I don’t want to see a score put on us, I want the team to show how much pride there is to represent Penrith, and fight tooth & nail. I want to see them claw for every metre & every tackle.

And, if they do, they can walk off at fulltime with their heads held high, and the club will be better, and richer and prouder for it.

No ball, no field position, one player in the bin, another ruled out with a HIA, only down10-0. I’d call that a win!!!

Pretty good first half. The Bulldogs want to be considered the team to take it all out this year. A cricket score has been predicted, but the spirit of the Penrith is on full display.

I man down and they shut the Bulldogs for the whole time they were down to to 12.

Smart move by Cleary to have Schneider kick to touch, it’s really bothering the Bulldogs flow.

Hopefully with some time to see what they are dealing with we have a plan going into the second half to score some points.
